totem's cfl recouperation and recycling program
Thanks to our CFL Recouperation and Recycling Program, you can enjoy the many benefits of compact fluorescent bulbs while reducing their effects on the environment.
compact fluorescent: a bright invention!
Compact fluorescent light blubs (CFLs) have gained in popularity in recent years due to their increased durability and energy efficiency. They not only help reduce energy costs, but also environmental costs related to lighting. In addition, since they last longer than other lighting types, fewer of these bulbs end up in landfills.
why recycle them?
Compact fluorescent bulbs contain very small amounts of mercury. Naturally, they pose no risk when used properly. However, mercury can leak out if they're broken or discarded. Result: Once in the environment, this heavy metal leaches into soil and water. It then accumulates in living organisms (fish in particular) and climbs the food chain until it reaches humans.
recycling: an enlightened solution
At the end of their useful life, compact fluorescents should definitely not be thrown out with household waste. Simply bring them to a participating Totem store near you. Most of their components are then recycled, such as the fluorescent powder, mercury, aluminum base and glass. When returning the bulbs, handle them with care so they don't break.
Tip: Remember to keep the original packaging. After use, you place the bulbs back in the package to protect them.
